The problem with traditional crosslinkers
Crosslinking involves connecting polymers through reactive chemistry to enhance key mechanical properties, such as adhesion, toughness, abrasion, and chemical resistance. However, reactive groups of traditional crosslinkers (aziridines, isocyanates, and melamines) are potentially harmful, irritating, sensitizing, or even toxic to humans and the environment.
In particular, the use of aziridines is falling significantly in specific applications due to their toxicity, handling limitations, and serious health risks for employees and customers. Even the latest aziridine market developments are still classified. Traditional crosslinkers also present drawbacks in terms of their technical performance. For example, commonly used isocyanates offer a limited pot life and high sensitivity to moisture.
