A one-on-one talk on the virtues of imagination

26 June 2017

At Stahl we believe that if it can be imagined, it can be created. If we open up ourselves to undiscovered opportunities, we take the first leap towards a new reality. A reality where the imagination of yesterday becomes the innovation of tomorrow. Cord Matthies, Stahl’s Global Mergers & Acquisitions Manager, shares his vision on the virtues of imagination.

What is your personal vision on imagination?
Imagination, “coming up with an image”, is the ultimate driver of the creative progress, it sets what you want to achieve. Without imagination there would be no inventions and no discoveries, no art and no music, no purpose of a team or a company, no innovation and no creative destruction. However, the road to success remains 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration, what follows imagination is hard work.

What role does imagination play at Stahl?
Our slogan speaks for itself; no company for which I have worked has lived by its tagline as much Stahl does. Success needs imagination and the freedom for taking initiative as starting points. Stahl fosters this, obviously within the ethical, sustainability, compliance and SHE frameworks and the objectives of a for-profit company. Stahl has a great climate for imagination.

How is imagination put to practice within Stahl?
In my field of expertise, Mergers and Acquisitions, our objective is to acquire companies into Stahl. I see the job more like extending our technology lead and/or our market position by acquiring companies, which means customers, technologies and product families that are new to us. Indeed it takes quite a lot of imagination to gauge how we can develop with new capabilities and customers.

What do you consider the most imaginative Stahl project?
I truly like our slogan, which rallies the employees behind imagination. I also like the market approach with Stahl Campus®, Application Labs and the ‘golden hands’, which create product-related and also emotional ties to the customers. Our marketing and commercial organization is set up to help our customers imagine new solutions, cooperatively with Stahl.

When you think about imagination, what is your dream scenario for the future?
That all imagination has overall positive and sustainable objectives.
