More sustainable, more competitive

Worldwide there is an increasing demand for more sustainable leather. At the same time, this is one of the biggest challenges for the Indian leather industry. Therefore, Stahl India Private Limited and the Indian CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute joined forces to make the Indian leather industry more sustainable. “Stahl and CSIR-CLRI believed that only by working together, a significant change in the industry can be realized. Therefore, we cooperate on Resource Conservation Technology and joint R&D in bioprocessing”, Tuncay Deriner, Managing Director of Stahl India Private Limited explains. The ultimate goal is that the partnership sets an example for the whole Indian leather industry.

To remain competitive, the Indian government identified sustainability as a key priority for the leather industry. Stahl wholeheartedly supports the Indian government in this. As market leader, we strongly believe in taking responsibility. We have the innovation power and expertise to support the Indian tanneries in making their production processes more sustainable and responsible. Therefore, we are pleased that the CSIR-CLRI choose us as partner.

The major identified areas are:
  • Joint R&D in Bioprocessing
  • Resource Conservation Technology
  • Other activities will be identified jointly from time to time for the benefit of the leather sector

A number of tanneries have already been identified to work with on these activities. This number will be expanded over time. “Ultimately, we hope this stimulates the entire Leather Sector to be associated with CSIR-CLRI to ensure Indian leather industry remains competitive worldwide”, Dr. A. B. Mandal, Director of CSIR-CLRI explains.
