Taking our united steps towards a smaller footprint

Clothing, bags and footwear, they become luxurious when made with first-rate leather. The distinctive appearance and creative possibilities that high-quality leather offers, inspire designers around the world to create great, lasting looks to fit our feet in a more sustainable way.

The global footwear market is on the rise. According to a recent report by ‘Transparancy Market Research’, as shoes are becoming more and more fashion accessories, the increasing demand for stylish and comfortable shoes among all ages is driving the footwear market to new heights. Expectation is that between now and 2025, revenues will increase by 3,0% worldwide. With this promising forecast also comes great responsibility. As high-quality leather is a beloved natural material, the footwear industry leaves a significant environmental footprint. Lowering this is a priority that can only be achieved by all players in the supply chain working closely together to ensure durable, sustainable change. Without losing sight of the quality and style criteria of leather shoes, together we can minimize the environmental footprint of leather production.

Transparency and sustainability from start to finish
We believe that transparency and cooperation throughout the supply chain leads to more sustainability. From start to finish: from tannery to finishing and beyond. To achieve this, trusted partnerships are essential. That is why we constantly challenge the industry and ourselves to improve technical performances, aesthetics and sustainability. That is also why we work closely together with brands, tanners, designers and NGO’s, for which we provide tailor-made solutions for a variety of steps in the entire production process of footwear. These solutions are developed and extensively tested in our Centers of Excellence and Application Labs in order to stay ahead, as a company and as a healthy supply chain.

Stahl offers an extensive portfolio of solutions for leather that focuses on beamhouse, tanning, retanning, finishing and aftercare processes. For instance, the 100% biodegradable and natural biotech beamhouse range Proviera® - Probiotics for Leather™ not only improves the quality of leather shoe uppers and linings, but also minimizes the environmental footprint of leather production. Our alternative tanning system Stahl EasyWhite Tan™ helps creating chrome-free high-quality leather in a more sustainable way, giving both shoe linings and uppers premium properties, as higher tear strength and less nubuckation.

First class finishing
On the finishing side of the process, we offer Stahl Neo: a comprehensive leather finish portfolio that not only seamlessly complies with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemical (ZDHC) Manufacturing Restricted Substance List (MRSL), but even exceeds them. Furthermore, our water-based Patent Leather finishing systems of base coats, top coats and additives add a luxurious touch to leather footwear, while our Stahl Easy Crust™ sustainable dye staining product allows you to easily create almost limitless colors in uppers and linings. Our range of high-performance water-based oils and waxes emulsion give the freedom to add a pull-up effect and a dry, silky, or rich waxy feel to the shoe. With our PFC-free and BTX-free water-repellent finishes, outdoor footwear is easily waterproofed, and finally our ample range of products for cleaning, protection, refinishing and repairing of leather shoes provides the smartest instruments for the best aftercare.
