Make your fashion statement in patent leather

Stahl Patent Leather systems make it easy to create your perfect fashion statement. Our solutions for Apparel & Accessories are very high gloss, impart a pleasingly luxurious feel and they use a transparent and flexible film that is lightfast to protect white and pastel shades. We also offer systems for classic and thermosetting patent leather finishes.

Patent leather base coats, top coats and additives

Comprising base coats, top coats and additives, our chemicals cover the entire process of creating top-quality patent leather. The base coats, with their high covering and filling layer, give the tanned leather a smooth surface that boosts adhesion and flexibility. These acetone- and solvent-resistant base coats also ensure a durable finish and a smooth natural feel. This is enhanced with a bi-component top coat, or paint, that is based on a polyisocyanate crosslinker and polyester polyol.

You can find the main features of our products in the table below, and we’re happy to help you select the combination of base coat and top coat that will work best for you.

About patent leather

Traditionally, patent leather was black. Today, though, it can be any color. What hasn’t changed is that patent leather is created with chemicals that give it a shiny, reflective surface. Most of the stages in making patent leather are the same as for other quality leather, with one difference: the use of a paint or lacquer to give the leather its high-gloss shine.

The process for making patent leather was invented in 1799 and involved painting leather with dyes and boiled oil and finishing it with an oil varnish. Another patent using a varnish of linseed oil, whale oil, horse grease and lamp black (a black pigment made from soot) was granted in 1805 and it was this shiny, black, waterproof surface that would later launch the patent leather craze.

The varnish used to create patent leather differed between tanners, who guarded their recipes jealously. The process, however, was similar and involved applying, drying and reapplying multiple coats of lacquer. The challenge, then as now, was to create a smooth, hard finish that would also flex a little to prevent the coating cracking under use.
