Stahl has signed up to an industry-wide action plan under which REACH registrants review and improve their previously submitted data on chemical substances.

REACH is a legally binding regulation for registering, evaluating, authorizing and restricting chemicals produced in or imported into the European Union. The regulation dates back to 2006, and the information required to complete a REACH registration dossier is critical in the risk-management and safe use of chemical substances. Solving information gaps is very important to reach a high level of protection of human health and the environment.

Reviewing and improving REACH dossiers

Last year, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) concluded that many of the REACH registration dossiers failed to include all the required information. In response, the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) developed a multi-year action plan to help REACH registrants evaluate and improve their safety data.

As a company, our decision to sign Cefic’s Declaration of Intent underlines our commitment to increasing transparency within the industry. Cefic’s REACH Dossier Improvement Action Plan enables us to contribute to improving the quality of REACH registration dossiers as part of a wider industry drive.

Multi-year action plan

The Cefic action plan runs until 2026. To comply with it, companies are first required to sign the organization’s Declaration of Intent (DOI). With this, they set out their intention to reevaluate their REACH dossiers and KPIs, plus provide further information where needed. Next, signatories must also express an intention to provide data once a year, so that Cefic can report publicly on the reviewed documents on an aggregated and anonymized basis.

Our commitment to industry safety and transparency

So far, more than 160 companies have already joined the action plan, and 1758 registration dossiers had been reevaluated at the time of writing. The names of these companies are available publicly, and the list is updated every month.

Signing the Cefic DOI is the latest milestone in our ongoing commitment to contribute to a more transparent and sustainable industry. Working towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) is a top priority, and we recently renewed our commitment to the UNSDGs in our 2019 Environment, Social and Governance Report.
