Our busy, modern world contains a lot of noisy moving parts. In the automotive industry in particular, the demand for components that dampen and isolate noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) is greater than ever. The average car contains up to 200 NVH parts, which are traditionally manufactured using solvent-based adhesives to attach rubber to vibrating components. However, these solvents are often harmful to both the environment and human health.

RelcaDur® water-based bonding system

RelcaDur® is Stahl’s first water-based rubber-to-substrate bonding system optimised for the manufacture of high-quality vehicle NVH parts. A non-toxic two-layer primer and bonding agent, RelcaDur® offers durable adhesion between elastomers and various surfaces, such as steel, aluminium, and plastic, without reliance on harmful solvents.

The RelcaDur® system consists of a primer (RelcaDur® 300), and a bonding agent or adhesive (RelcaDur® 600). These layers are sequentially applied to a substrate by spraying, roll coating, dipping, or brushing, forming a non-tacky, durable, and scratch-resistant surface. During the vulcanisation stage, RelcaDur® 300 and RelcaDur® 600 form robust chemical bonds to each other and the elastomers, and tightly adhere to the substrate material.

Free from carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic (CMR) chemicals, very low to low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), RelcaDur® is better for the environment and human health, and allows OEMs to meet stricter regulatory and sustainability standards. RelcaDur® also releases around 6,000 to 9,400 times less CO2eq per kg of bonding agent system than alternative solvent systems, and results in lower insurance costs due to less hazardous material storage and lower fire risks.
