Every tanner knows that processing hides generates lots of wastewater and solid residues. This means that tanners must manage excesses of non-leather materials to avoid pollution and trouble with statutory provisions. There are three ways to do this: reducing chemical use through optimal dosing and exhaustion of processing agents, reusing chemical auxiliaries wherever possible and recycling solid residues for use in other industries.
Biotechnology in the form of probiotics help tanners to implement these strategies by reducing needed chemicals, improving performance of auxiliaries and adding value to by-products. Clean labeled products with NSF product registration
Hide by-products from the leather production process are typically used for other purposes. For example, the lime fleshing and lime splits of the hides often become a raw material for collagen and gelatin producers in the food industry. Collagen and gelatin are foodstuffs that end up in the food we eat can hardly be replaced. Auxiliaries used in the beamhouse for soaking and liming should therefore be as much as possible clean and therefore clean labeled, so the raw materials are safer to use for the food and beverage industry.
